Seminarian James ZickSeminarian James Zick was instituted to the ministry of lector by his Grace, Archbishop Daniel Bohan, November 7th at St. Joseph’s Parish in Moose Jaw where Zick is currently on internship.

A Regina native, Zick is in his fourth year of studies at St. Joseph’s seminary in Edmonton.  Prior to entering the seminary he completed his Bachelor of Arts in history at the University of Regina.

During the homily Archbishop Bohan explained how a lector is to present the Word of God to the Church community and in doing so to remind all of the faithful that they are conveyers of God’s words.

He emphasized that just as faith is a lived relationship with God, the key to that relationship is communication.

“The most important relationships in our life, that of marriage and the family depend very much on the words that are spoken because the words convey who we are,” said Bohan.

The Archbishop said the words of the Gospel are important because through them God is telling people he loves them.

“Your lips are speaking those whispers of love from God to each of us,” said Bohan during this explanation of the importance of one who serves as a lector.

The lector will proclaim God’s word in the liturgical assembly, instruct children and adults in the faith and prepare them to receive the sacraments appropriately, said Bohan.

“You will bring the message of salvation to those who have not received it thus with your help men and women will come to know God our Father and his Son Jesus Christ whom he sent,” said Bohan.

Just before the rite of institution Bohan encouraged Zick to accept the Word of God in  obedience, entrust himself to the Holy Spirit and meditate on the Gospels so as to proclaim Christ in all he says and does.

After the Mass there was a time of fellowship with parishioners.  Rev. Rick Krofchek, is the Pastor of St. Joseph’s in Moose Jaw and Rev. Louis Nguyen is the associate pastor.

Who doesn’t know that in Canada abortion is an allowable ‘medical procedure’?  Very few, I’m guessing. I also guess that the vast majority of Canadians have never considered how this social contagion has found its way into Canadian society.

This week, I had the opportunity to hang out with some high school students as  we embarked on a  "pilgrimage walk".  We processed through parts of South Regina, with a group of about 70 teenagers, stopping at various points along the way to pray and reflect. We were led by some pretty talented wandering minstrels!
