Vocations logo

The word, “vocation” is derived from the Latin word, “vocare”, which means “to call” or “a call that I hear”.

Vocation is a complex reality which affects the nitty-gritty of our entire lives and is composed of three intricately-related aspects:

  • who the Lord calls us to be (our self-identity)
  • how the Lord calls us to become our unique selves (vocational lifestyle)
  • what the Lord calls us to do for God and others (our mission or ministry)

Are You Wondering About Your Vocation?

The videos below have been produced by the Archdiocese of Regina and by other dioceses on the topic of the priestly vocation. You can also find answers to many questions about becoming a priest at this link: http://www.diocesanpriest.com

Introducing our Seminarians

The people of the Archdiocese of Regina are blessed to have a number of candidates on a journey of study and discernment as they explore their personal vocations to the priesthood. It has been many years since the group has been this large and it’s a sign to us that our Catholic family of faith is entering a period of renewal. The past three Holy Fathers, Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have all brought a charism of hope to their ministries and a focus on building up young Catholics and we are reaping the fruit of those efforts today.

The Archdiocese of Regina is geographically a very large diocese. It covers about the same landmass as Germany with roughly 140,000 Catholics. We face a special challenge in that the nearest seminary is in Edmonton, over a 9 hr. drive away! However, our seminarians work hard to stay in touch and to come back to volunteer and be present in our parishes and our ministry programs several times a year. The support our seminarians receive from caring donors to Catholic Missions in Canada makes all the difference in the world to helping our community meet the additional financial burden of providing for travel to and from the seminary and all the costs associated with not being able to train our candidates at home.

It’s a privilege for all of us here in the Archdiocese of Regina to walk alongside men who have chosen to follow a personal call from God and to commit themselves to discerning whether that may lead to beginning a new life in God as ordained priests. Thank you for sharing in this journey through your gifts and your prayers!

Daniel Malone was born and raised in Regina. He studied at Campion College and helped found the Campion College Knights of Columbus Council 15955. There he majored in mathematics, then linguistics, but left university before graduating. In the Fall of 2016 he started attending St. Philip Neri Seminary at the Toronto Oratory, studying philosophy. All prayers for the increase in sanctity and numbers of the clergy, seminarians, and religious are needed, welcome, and appreciated. He studies now at St Augustine Seminary in Toronto, Ontario.

Cong Vu Bui
was born on June 24, 1981. He is the sixth child in a Catholic family. He entered the Cistercian Congregation of Chau Son, Holy Mother Monastery in Don Duong, Vietnam on August 24, 2003, at the age of 22. On August 14, 2005, he became a novice and on August 15, 2007, he took temporary vows. On July 24, 2011, he received final vows with Abbot Gioan Vianney Phuong Tri Nguyen, the Abbot of the Cistercian Congregation of Chau Son. He came to the Archdiocese of Regina, Saskatchewan in 2019. He would like to become a disciple, a priest of the Lord to serve the Church through holy orders. With the desire to preach the good news, and to be able to bring souls to God through the celebration of the sacraments, he has not stopped pursuing my vocation and studying for the priesthood. In general, I want to study to become a priest to respond to the call, which God has called me. He studies now at St Joseph Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta.

Murray Wright
is 42 years old. He says about himself: “My wife Jessica and I have two wonderful, energetic children Natiana and Noah. I was a former Anglican Priest who eventually ‘came home’ to the Catholic Church. I am currently employed as a high school teacher with Regina Catholic School Division. I am also proud to serve the brave men and women of Regina Fire & Protective Services as one of their chaplains. In my free time, I volunteer as a firefighter and paramedic in the community. I love and live in: White City & Emerald Park.

Though it took years for God to convince me of the truth of the Catholic Church, following my vocation to become a Catholic Priest is one of pure joy. The opportunity to be a Priest in Christ’s “…One Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church…” is an honour. Therefore, I wish to thank the Triune God, the Catholic Church, the Archdiocese of Regina, and the many wonderful people the Lord has placed in my life who have supported me. I humbly ask, all who read this, for your prayers as I pursue the priesthood in the Catholic Church.”
