Our Lady of the Prairies... Deconsecrated

BY Frank Flegel

ROWATT, SASKATCHEWAN……Our Lady of the Prairies Catholic Church has probably been seen by more people than most other churches in Saskatchewan. Located in the hamlet of Rowatt, a hop, skip and a jump south of Regina on Highway Six, the church is just on the east edge of the highway. Thousands of people in their vehicles would pass by the unobtrusive drab looking church with the curious square steeple with a cross on top as they approach the city, the first landmark that Regina was just a few minutes away.

St. Peter's Colony Celebrates Centennial

By Frank Flegel

In 1913, Father Henri Metzger looked at the sloped hillside of Manybone Creek near Kronau and envisioned a Shrine to the Blessed Virgin, similar to what he saw at Lourdes, France.

He mobilized the tiny community of St. Peter’s Colony to dig into the hillside and haul rocks from the surrounding fields to build his dream. Four years later, on August 15, 1917, the first pilgrimage was held to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. Archbishop Olivier Mathieu celebrated the inaugural mass.
