The Director of Social Justice and Outreach is responsible for the oversight, coordination and implementation of the social mission of the Church within the Diocese of Calgary. The Director is the Bishop’s primary representative and liaison with charitable agencies, advocacy and community organizations and other partner organizations carrying out the mission of the Church.  In addition, the Diocesan Director is responsible for promoting increased engagement of Catholics in these various ministries and work with agency directors to create opportunities for collaboration and service.



·Oversee, coordinate, and implement social justice and outreach programs and initiatives that further the social mission of the Church


·Serve as Liaison for the Bishop/Diocese with charitable agencies, advocacy and community organizations, and other partner organizations carrying out the mission of the Church.

·Work with the Leadership Team to support the Bishop’s vision on the social mission of the Diocese. 

·Develop long-range planning on a more effective social justice/social ministry effort in the diocese through the effective oversight and coordination of the offices in the department.

·Build good relationships with directors, board members, and key staff members of local charitable agencies and seek ways to support and encourage them for the work they are doing. 

·Troubleshoot when difficult issues arise within these organizations. 

·Provide support to directors in understanding Catholic social teaching and Catholic identity issues. 

·Strategize with directors and staff of local organizations about how these groups interface with parishes. 

·Work with parish leaders seeking to respond to the needs of brothers and sisters locally, nationally and in other parts of the world. 

·Assist the Bishop in establishing constructive relationships with the local and provincial government. 

·Develop a plan for how parish leaders will be recruited, trained and supported in development of effective outreach ministry committees in the parishes. 

·Collaborate with pastors and designated ministers to develop and implement an effective outreach agenda. This includes identifying the outreach needs within the diocese. These needs may include, but not be limited to: persons who are homebound, ill, grieving, in prison, economically poor, disabled, and/or in need of food, clothing or housing. 

·Assure the development of volunteers for outreach purposes. This is accomplished, in coordination with the Human Resources department, by recruiting, screening, training, motivating and supporting volunteers, and by providing ongoing educational and training opportunities in the areas of Social Justice.

·Assure that the budget for the department is prepared and presented in a timely manner. 

·Maintain a level of knowledge and skills required for this ministry. This can be accomplished by reading, attending workshops and conventions. 

·Other duties as assigned by the Moderator of the Curia.


·4-year college degree from accredited college or university. 

·5 years of service to the Catholic Church or equivalent in various advocacy and social service ministries.

·Training in and knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching; 

·Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships; 

·Proven leadership with vision, strategy and execution; 

·Knowledge and respect for community organizing and various organizing networks; 

·Basic understanding of budgets, balance sheets, financial statements, audits and other documents relating to the operation of a charitable agency; 

·Strong public relations, writing, and communication skills including comfort with media interface; able to work in a team-oriented environment

·Handle multiple assignments consecutively and prioritize workload
