CCCB President, Archbishop Richard Gagnon has written to the Patriarch of the Maronite Church in Bkerke, Lebanon in light of the recent harbour explosion in Beirut. Expressing the sympathies of the Canadian Church, Archbishop Gagnon acknowledged the horrific nature of the disaster "that has destroyed the lives and livelihoods of so many people."

Initial investigations point to a large amount of ammonium nitrate abandoned in a port warehouse as the cause of the August 4 explosion that has left 150 persons dead, thousands wounded, and hundreds of thousands homeless. Gagnon expressed heartbreak at the sight of the various images of the explosion that began circulating soon after and the devastation it has wrought on a country already suffering under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seeking the intercession of Saints Maron and Charbel, both important patrons to the Maronite Church in Lebanon, the Archbishop offered the prayerful support and solidarity of the Bishops and Church of Canada.
