Archbishop and CCO: Youth In The Church

Last updated on January 28, 2015

Sitting comfortably on an upholstered rocking chair and looking much like a grandfather speaking to his grandchildren, Regina Archbishop Daniel Bohan told a group of young adults they have an important role to play in the life of the Church. The informal gathering of Catholic Christian Outreach (CC) a university centred youth group invited the Archbishop to speak on a subject of his choice and to meet with local participants in CCO. The 25 sat in chairs, love seats, chesterfields and on the floor of the Aquinas Room used by the parish’s youth ministry. Bohan, frequently quoting Pope Francis and Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel), said young people like all baptized Catholics are called to be evangelists but not evangelists going door to door like Jehovah Witness. “Let people see the joy that is in our life because of our faith.” The Regina Archbishop is a big fan of Pope Francis. He told the group he was in Rome November 2014 to meet with a seminarian studying there and while...

Christmas Hampers Decorated

Last updated on December 17, 2014

St. Francis School Grades five and six teacher Kelly Walby was looking for an Advent project for her class in December 2013. She contacted the Regina Food Bank and asked if there was anything her class could do in an artistic vein that would help the Food Bank. “He told me, ‘well we have these ugly brown boxes we use to pack our Christmas Hampers could you do anything with that’, could we, I replied!”

So began a project that took on a life of its own. From 30 boxes from students in one classroom in December 2013 it has expanded to more than 1,000 boxes from nine schools in the Regina Roman Catholic School Division and two in Regina public School Division. Walby said 30 individual families also became involved. “I had a family night December 3 and more than 100 people showed up just from St. Francis and the families asked to do this again next year.”

The Food Bank supplied the boxes and all students in the nine elementary schools took part. Students were given some...

How Did I Get Here?

Last updated on December 14, 2014

Every Advent, I enter into the season with the best of intentions for a blessed and holy Advent journey. And then the madness that is December hits and I find myself at Christmas Eve mass wondering ….. ”How did I get here?”  Despite my best intentions, I realize that Advent is gone, Christmas is here, and I am unprepared, not at peace and frustrated!

This year, I again entered into the season with determination. But I have finally accepted that there is no way to get where I want to go, without embracing simplicity. It has been difficult, but the reality is, I needed to eliminate MUCH of what I used to try and accomplish. This year I chose 3 or 4 special events/concerts/parties etc. that mean a lot to me and determined to really enjoy them.  The rest, I declined, or rescheduled for the new year.

I also had the opportunity to go East and visit my sister this year for a week at the start of December. A whole week away…! In December!! With so much to do!! It...

Night Fever

Last updated on October 28, 2014

Thankyou to Tina Kleisinger (pastoral support coordinator) for contributing as a guest for this month's blog.

“Night Fever" - A bridge between individuals, parishes and communities!

Victoria Park, Regina; September 6, 2014 was host to “Praise in the Park”.  This ecumenical initiative was part of a week-long event with a mission to mobilize the churches of Regina to touch people’s lives with the amazing, life-transforming love of Jesus Christ.

It was a beautiful day, in every sense of the word to give praise to our God through music, prayer and fellowship.  Our own “Source Band”, along with “Vision” and the “Resurrection choir”, were among the numbers of music groups that led songs of worship, filling the hearts of all in the crowd.  But “Praise in the Park” stretched far beyond the confines of the park periphery, as that same evening with the first of its kind in the city & archdiocese, Blessed Sacrament Parish opened its doors to the Regina community for “...

Lessons From Camp

Last updated on July 29, 2014

Preparing for and running a summer camp is an incredible amount of work! Yet every year summer, camp stands out as one of the ministry highlights of my year. So I have to ask myself why.....?

-Is it the steady diet of hotdogs and hambugers?  Unlikely.

-Is it the 3-4 hours of sleep each night?  Nope!

-How about that smell....a blend of mosquito repellant, sunscreen and unwashed clothes?
Think I could live pretty nicely without that particular fragrance.

-And the bugs...a cocktail of wasps AND mosquitos AND fish flies AND ticks? Definitely not!!

So what DOES make it so worthwhile? Allow me to share....

- Watching campers step out of their comfort zone while a whole crowd encourages them.

- Watching young adults minister & share their gifts; willingly, enthusiastically and usually for no pay.

- The ability to slow down and unplug and watch kids relax and unwind.

- The gift of so much laughter! Those...
