Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus
Prayer of invocation to the Holy Spirit
Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with the prayer Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus, the first words of the original Latin, meaning, “We stand before You, Holy Spirit,” which has been historically used at Councils, Synods and other Church gatherings for hundreds of years, and is attributed to Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560 – 4 April 636). As we embrace this Synodal Process, this prayer invites the Holy Spirit to be at work in us so that we may be a community and a people of grace. For the Synodal journey from 2021 to 2023, we propose the following simplified version, so that any group or liturgical assembly can pray it more easily. Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus
We stand before You, Holy Spirit,
as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us,
make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go
and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful;
do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path
nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity
so that we may journey together to eternal life
and not stray from the way of truth
and what is right.
All this we ask of You,
who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son,
forever and ever.
Amen.

Prière d’invocation à l’Esprit Saint
Chaque session du Concile Vatican II a commencé par la prière Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus, premier mot de l’original latin signifiant “Nous nous tenons devant Toi, Esprit Saint”, qui a été utilisée historiquement lors des Conciles, Synodes et autres rassemblements de l’Eglise depuis des centaines d’années, étant attribuée à Saint Isidore de Séville (vers 560 – 4 avril 636). Alors que nous sommes appelés à embrasser ce chemin synodal du Synode 2021-2023, cette prière invite l’Esprit Saint à agir en nous afin que nous puissions être une communauté et un peuple de grâce. Pour le Synode 2021-2023, nous proposons d’utiliser cette version simplifiée, afin que tout groupe ou assemblée liturgique puisse prier plus facilement. Nous voici devant Toi, Esprit Saint ;
en Ton Nom, nous sommes réunis.
Toi notre seul conseiller,
viens à nous,
demeure avec nous,
daigne habiter nos coeurs.
Enseigne-nous vers quel but nous orienter ;
montre-nous comment nous devons marcher ensemble.
Nous qui sommes faibles et pécheurs,
ne permets pas que nous provoquions le désordre.
Fais en sorte,
que l’ignorance ne nous entraîne pas sur une fausse route,
ni que la partialité influence nos actes.
Que nous trouvions en Toi notre unité,
sans nous éloigner du chemin de la vérité et de la justice,
en avançant ensemble vers la vie éternelle.
Nous Te le demandons à Toi,
qui agis en tout temps et en tout lieu,
dans la communion du Père et du Fils,
pour les siècles des siècles.
