Jean-Marie Rodrigue Villeneuve, O.M.I., first bishop of Gravelbourg, was born on November 2, 1883 in Montreal.

After completing his studies at Mont Saint-Louis, he entered the Oblate novitiate at Lachine, and received his theological studies at Ottawa before his ordination on May 25, 1907.

Jean-Marie Rodrigue Villeneuve, O.M.I., first bishop of Gravelbourg, was born on November 2, 1883 in Montreal.

After completing his studies at Mont Saint-Louis, he entered the Oblate novitiate at Lachine, and received his theological studies at Ottawa before his ordination on May 25, 1907.

He spent the next 23 years teaching at the Oblate Scholasticate until his appointment as the first Bishop of Gravelbourg. His consecration took place on September 11, 1930, in Ottawa, and he took possession of his See on September 17.

After only 15 months in this office, he was appointed to the archiepiscopal and primatial See of Quebec.

He took leave of Gravelbourg on February 20, 1932, and was installed as Archbishop of Quebec on February 24.

One year later, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals.
