WYD Panama 2019

34th World Youth Day #Panama2019 Underway

Pilgrims from around the world in the hundreds of thousands have flocked to Panama for the 34th World Youth Day Gathering of the Roman Catholic Church. Initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1985, this is the first time that Central America has hosted the massive gathering of young people which takes place every two to three years. Organizers are expecting slightly smaller crowds this year in Panama due to the fact that, in the southern hemisphere, many teens and young adults are still in classes through the week whereas many past gatherings in the Northern Hemisphere have been held outside of the regular school year.

Cinta Costera will host the main events during the week of World Youth Day: the Opening Ceremonies, the Papal Welcome Ceremony, and the Stations of the Cross. This tropical, waterfront “coastal beltway” is made up of 64 acres of parkland that stretch approximately 3km along the Panama Bay. The site for the World Youth Day Papal Vigil and Closing Mass has not yet been announced.

Canada’s Salt and Light Television network will be providing comprehensive, daily coverage of World Youth Day events throughout the week. Salt and Light programming can be streamed to any of your smart devices using the links provided or by visiting www.saltandlgithtv.org.
