Prominent Saskatchewan CTV news director and Catholic Journalist Frank Flegel passed away peacefully on the morning of December 31, 2023.  He was 89.

Frank worked tirelessly and professionally in broadcasting and journalism for more than six decades, serving first in radio in 1962 before moving to television in 1970. At that time, he helped establish CKCK Television’s news team and served as director and producer for many years.

Frank was most well-known within the Catholic community for his faith-filled and balanced contributions to Catholic journalism, serving Saskatchewan’s Prairie Messenger newspaper for decades and supporting the Archdiocese of Regina’s communication needs for many years. Archbishop Don Bolen recalled with appreciation, the breadth of experience and faith that Frank brought to the diocese and Catholic media in general, “After a lengthy and illustrious career in broadcasting with CKCK, the Archdiocese of Regina was blessed to have Frank take the helm of its communications. He brought a broad range of experience and a deep and informed faith to this work, producing informative articles for the Prairie Messenger for many years. Frank worked in communications into his 80’s and was a gracious and generous colleague. May he rest in peace and rise in glory to see the face of the Risen Lord.”

In addition to his tireless work in broadcasting and journalism, Frank was a generous contributor of his time and talents to the broader community, having served in numerous community volunteer capacities throughout his life, including as an elected trustee of the Regina Catholic School Division. In a final message to family and friends, Frank shared, “In 1624, English poet John Donne wrote ‘no man is an island entire to himself.’ It means we are all part of each other, so what I became is the product of my family, friends, and many people over my lifetime – and I am thankful to everyone.”

Frank was predeceased by his parents, Franz Daniel Flegel and Katerina Siekawitsch Flegel, his brother Daniel, and sisters Carrie and Eva. Frank’s passing is mourned by his wife, Sandra, their five children, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and all of those whom his life and work have touched.
