The Archdiocese of Regina resides in Treaty 4 territory and as such serves 26 First Nations, Metis communities and all RC parishes that are located within its boundaries.
A Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC) led by Bishop Don Bolen and an IRS (Indian Residential School) survivor helps to guide the archdiocese and its parishes in walking with Indigenous Peoples in a good way, and to manage the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF).
The primary purpose of the TRC is to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #61 by supporting survivor-led local projects and initiatives of:
- Healing and reconciliation for communities and families
- Culture and language revitalization
- Education and community building
- Dialogues involving Indigenous elders, spiritual leaders and youth with focus on Indigenous spirituality and culture
The secondary purpose of projects is to engage Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in walking and working together. Where possible, projects will encourage support and engagement from members of local parishes.
The TRC’s approach is to build relationships with First Nation and Métis communities in rural and urban communities within the boundaries of the Archdiocese of Regina.
The TRC Regina Urban Committee’s survivor-led projects include the establishment of the Regina Survivors Circle and the Circle of Allies (non-Indigenous allies) who work together to plan and carry out educational and intercultural activities and events. Some events held in 2025 include National Indigenous Peoples Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Storytelling in February, and First Nations cultural activities such as berry and sage gathering, ribbon skirt making, beading and powwow regalia and dance demonstrations. More events and activities are being planned for 2026.
The TRC Outreach Committee has worked with First Nations Bands who have successfully held survivor-led projects in their communities. All 26 First Nations communities have access to the IRF funds https://irfund.ca/en/welcome/.
