Pope Leo XIV’s Encyclical Letter, Magnifica Humanitas, was released today. It focuses on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence. The letter is dated 15 May, to commemorate the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s Encyclical Letter, Rerum Novarum.
The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development offers the following synopsis of the Encyclical Letter: “Magnifica Humanitas offers insights into the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence, recognizing a profound epochal shift. It places the dignity of the human person at the centre as the criteria for guiding technical progress. The Church’s social teaching accompanies these transformations, pointing to the common good, solidarity and subsidiarity as the fundamental benchmarks for understanding and interpreting the transformation currently underway. It proposes, as an alternative to the culture of power and war, a civilization of love founded on justice, dialogue and shared responsibility.”
To accompany the Encyclical Letter, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has prepared a collection of resources on the topic of artificial intelligence.

La lettre encyclique du pape Léon XIV, Magnifica Humanitas, a été publiée aujourd’hui. Elle porte sur la protection de la personne humaine à l’ère de l’intelligence artificielle. La lettre est datée du 15 mai, afin de commémorer le 135e anniversaire de l’encyclique du pape Léon XIII, Rerum Novarum.
Le Dicastère pour le service du développement humain intégral nous présente ainsi la lettre encyclique : « Magnifica Humanitas propose une réflexion sur la protection de la personne humaine à l’ère de l’intelligence artificielle, reconnaissant un profond changement d’époque. Cette encyclique place la dignité de l’être humain au centre, comme référence pour orienter le progrès technique. La doctrine sociale de l’Église accompagne ces transformations, en identifiant le bien commun, la solidarité et la subsidiarité comme critères fondamentaux pour lire et interpréter la transformation qui est en train de se dérouler. Elle propose, comme alternative à la culture de la puissance et de la guerre, une civilisation de l’amour fondée sur la justice, le dialogue et la responsabilité partagée. »
Pour accompagner la lettre encyclique, la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada a préparé un ensemble de ressources sur le sujet de l’intelligence artificielle.
