Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home in Regina was invited by Emmanuel Care to host the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program. CPE is an accredited program recognized nationally and internationally for its training of professional, spiritual-pastoral care providers. Through academic study, clinical supervision and practical experience, CPE students learn to listen more effectively and attend to patients, residents, family and staff. Students and graduates serve in a variety of institutional and community settings such as health care, corrections, education and private practice. Students include seminarians, clergy, chaplains and spiritual care practitioners. Students have also included volunteers in both health care facilities and in the community at large. The program helps students to become better equipped to provide emotional, spiritual and religious support as well as comfort to others. CPE has become the standard for quality spiritual/pastoral care.
The CPE unit that was held at Santa Maria concluded on May 24, 2019. A bouquet of thanks goes out to the many people who supported this program both financially and with their time and expertise. Residents, family members and staff at Santa Maria bid a fond farewell to Reed and Sr. Emelyn who spent many hours visiting and building relationships. Leona and Chris spent their clinical time at Providence Place in Moose Jaw and also left a lasting impression. Susan, Cheryl and Alexis will continue their Spiritual Care roles in their respective facilities. This unit could not have happened without the 3 month commitment of Marvin Shank. He left his life in London, Ontario for the duration of the program to share his talent. Santa Maria hopes to host another unit of CPE in the near future.
Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home is one of 14 Catholic Health Facilities owned by Emmanuel Care in Saskatchewan and one of two in Regina (the other being the new Trinity Manor).
