Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. the bells rang from church tower of St. Michael’s Parish in Bangor Saskatchewan.  These bells announced the start of the Mass of decommissioning of St. Michael’s parish.  This would be the last Mass celebrated at St. Michael’s.

Although this Mass symbolized an ending, it remained an inspiring, faith-filled celebration including beautiful music, and thoughtful readings. A homily delivered by Bishop Don Bolen reflected on all the momentous celebrations and jubilant gatherings held at St. Michaels over the years.  Father Francis Plaparampil, current pastor of St. Michael’s, concelebrated. The church was full including the choir loft.  Voices sang out loudly led by the choir from St. Mary’s, Grayson.  During the decommissioning Mass, all those present were given an opportunity to come forward to the altar and honour the altar.

St. Michael’s is a parish community community with a history of determination, strength and love of their faith.  The parish was started in 1935 by the Redemptorists of Yorkton with services being held in the Aston School.  With Rev. Floyd as parish priest and the raising of funds through bake sales, fowl suppers and socials, the congregation built the church known as St. Michael’s.  The parish and cemetery was blessed by Archbishop O’Neill on July 6, 1951.  The parish thrived and in 2000 a beautiful cemetery sign and gate were erected.

At the end of the Mass, all those present gathered on the St. Michaels front step for a photo.  Accompanied by parishioners, Bishop Don processed to the cemetery and blessed the beginnings of a new tribute building and gravestones of those who lay in rest.  Several statues from the church will be housed in a special enclosure in the cemetery, which will now be in the care of the town of Bangor.

The legacy and strength of St. Michael’s members will continue to inspire and shape the community for generations to come.
