STATEMENT FROM THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TO THE CATHOLIC FAITHFUL on the occasion of the 2024 National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
In solemn prayer and reflection, the Executive Committee of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops mourns the painful legacy of the former Indian Residential Schools and reaffirms its commitment to walking with Indigenous Peoples on their healing and reconciliation journey.
On the 2024 National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we are reminded of the Holy Father’s profound hope “that Christians and civil society in this land may grow in the ability to accept and respect the identity and the experience of the Indigenous Peoples”.
This hope invites the Catholic faithful of Canada to listen with open hearts, to honor the stories we hear, and to embrace the path of truth and healing.
May the Lord guide us with His grace as we walk this path together, bringing healing, understanding, and renewed hope for a brighter future.
DÉCLARATION DU BUREAU DE DIRECTION AUX FIDÈLES CATHOLIQUES à l’occasion de la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation 2024
Solennellement, dans la prière et la réflexion, le Bureau de direction de la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada exprime sa peine devant l’héritage douloureux des anciens pensionnats autochtones et réaffirme son engagement à accompagner les peuples autochtones sur le chemin de la guérison et de la réconciliation.
À l’occasion de la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation de 2024, nous nous rappelons le voeu sincère exprimé par le Saint-Père « que les chrétiens et la société de cette terre grandiront dans leur capacité à accueillir et à respecter l’identité et l’expérience des peuples autochtones. »
Cette espérance appelle les fidèles catholiques du Canada à ouvrir leur coeur, à honorer les récits qui nous sont racontés et à emprunter le chemin de la vérité et de la guérison.
Que le Seigneur nous guide par sa grâce alors que nous marchons ensemble sur ce chemin, porteurs de guérisons, de commisération et d’un espoir renouvelé vers un avenir plus radieux.
