Montreal, 15 October —With the support of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Aid to the Church in Need Canada (ACN), Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) Canada, and Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada (DPCC) are launching an appeal for prayers and generosity to support the most urgent needs of people in Lebanon, following the bombardments in the country that have already claimed hundreds of innocent lives.
“With the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel now having spread into Lebanon, causing further death, destruction and displacement, let us, the Catholic faithful in Canada, renew our prayers for peace in the Middle East, as urged by Pope Francis, and do whatever we can to help the people who are affected by this recent escalation in violence,” says the Most Rev. William T. McGrattan, Bishop of Calgary and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB).
Caritas Lebanon reports, “Thousands of families are fleeing their homes as conflict escalates in southern Lebanon. We are providing shelter, food, medical care, and psychological support, but we need your help to continue. Every contribution makes a difference.”
Echoing Caritas Lebanon, Most Rev. McGrattan says, “There are people in Lebanon who urgently need our help at this time. That is why, in my capacity as CCCB president, I invite you to donate either to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) Canada, to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) Canada, or to Development and Peace—Caritas Canada (DPCC).” He adds, “Each of these organizations will work with local agencies in Lebanon to ensure your donations bring targeted and effective relief to those who are suffering.
Marie-Claude Lalonde, National Director of ACN Canada; Dr. Adriana Bara, National Director of CNEWA Canada; and Luke Stocking, interim Executive Director of DPCC, are launching a joint appeal for help for the Lebanese people: “Your donations and prayers will be a great comfort to the shaken population.” According to Marielle Boutros, ACN’s project coordinator for Lebanon, “People are now living in church halls, so they will need food, sanitary products, mattresses, blankets, and if it continues, we will need heating for winter, though, of course, we hope it will not last that long.”
Religious sisters persevere despite violence
According to information received by CNEWA Canada, religious sisters in Lebanon belonging to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary have also been affected by the bombing. “I am still in one piece,” confided Sister Maya Beiano, who is also director of a school run by her congregation. “Missiles are hitting just next to us, the convent is shaking, and windows are breaking.” Just a week ago, she was planning on opening the school whose goal is to preserve the Christian presence in the region while offering a sound education to all. “As long as there is a child and a mother in the village, I will maintain my mission,” she says, ending the conversation by asking us to keep her in our prayers.
The directors explain that funds received will be used towards food, medical supplies, shelter, and other essential goods now and, in the months to come, to meet the basic needs of the affected population. With winter just around the corner, heating assistance will also become important. When the conflict subsides, which they hope will happen as soon as possible, the focus will move to the reconstruction of the buildings and, above all, the healing of all those who are traumatized.
“Finally, we call on our benefactors to pray for an end to the violence, not only in Lebanon, but throughout the Holy Land and Middle East,” implore the directors, adding, “We echo Pope Francis’s call for a ceasefire, which is a necessary first step toward a just and peaceful resolution of this conflict.”

Montréal, 15 octobre — Avec le soutien de la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada (CECC), Aide à l’Église en Détresse Canada (AED), CNEWA Canada (l’Association catholique d’aide à l’Orient) et Développement et Paix – Caritas Canada (DPCC) lancent un appel à la générosité afin de soutenir les besoins de plus en plus urgents au Liban, à la suite des bombardements dans le pays qui ont déjà fait des centaines de victimes innocentes.
« Alors que le conflit entre le Hezbollah et Israël s’est étendu au Liban, causant encore plus de morts, de destructions et de déplacements, renouvelons, nous les fidèles catholiques du Canada, nos prières pour la paix au Moyen-Orient, comme nous y invite le pape François, et faisons tout ce que nous pouvons pour aider les personnes touchées par cette récente escalade de la violence », déclare Mgr William T. McGrattan, évêque de Calgary et président de la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada (CECC).
Caritas Liban rapporte : « Des milliers de familles fuient leurs maisons à cause de l’escalade du conflit dans le sud du Liban. Nous fournissons des abris, de la nourriture, des soins médicaux et un soutien psychologique, mais nous avons besoin de votre aide pour continuer. Chaque contribution fait la différence ».
Faisant écho à Caritas Liban, Mgr McGrattan a déclaré : « Il y a des gens au Liban qui ont un besoin urgent de notre aide en ce moment. C’est pourquoi, en tant de président de la CECC, je vous invite à faire un don à Aide à l’Église en Détresse (AED) Canada, à l’Association catholique d’aide à l’Orient (CNEWA) Canada ou à Développement et Paix—Caritas Canada (DPCC) ». Il ajoute :
« Chacun de ces organismes travaille avec des agences locales au Liban pour s’assurer que vos dons apportent une aide ciblée et efficace à ceux et celles qui souffrent ».
Marie-Claude Lalonde, directrice nationale de l’AED, Adriana Bara, Ph. D., directrice nationale de CNEWA Canada et Luke Stocking, directeur général par intérim de DPCC, lancent un appel conjoint pour venir en aide à la population libanaise. « Vos dons et vos prières seront d’un grand réconfort pour la population fortement ébranlée », ajoutent-ils. Selon Marielle Boutros, la coordonnatrice des projets pour le Liban pour AED, « les gens vivent maintenant dans des salles paroissiales, ils auront donc besoin de nourriture, de produits sanitaires, de matelas, de couvertures, et si cela continue, nous aurons besoin de chauffage pour l’hiver, même si, bien sûr, nous espérons que cela ne durera pas aussi longtemps ».
Des religieuses inquiètes persévèrent malgré la violence
Selon des informations reçues par CNEWA Canada, des religieuses au Liban de la Congrégation des Sœurs des Sacrés Cœurs de Jésus et de Marie sont touchées de près par les bombardements. « Je suis encore en un seul morceau », a confié sœur Maya Beiano, qui est aussi directrice d’une école tenue par sa congrégation. « Des missiles frappent juste à côté, le couvent tremble et les fenêtres éclatent ». Il y a seulement une semaine, elle espérait ouvrir l’école, dont le but est de préserver la présence chrétienne dans la région tout en offrant une bonne éducation à tous et toutes. « Aussi longtemps qu’il y aura un enfant et une mère dans le village, je vais maintenir ma mission » dit-elle, concluant la conversation en nous demandant de la garder dans nos prières.
Les directrices et directeur expliquent que les fonds reçus seront utilisés maintenant et dans les mois à venir pour acheter de la nourriture, des fournitures médicales, des abris et d’autres produits essentiels pour répondre aux besoins de base de la population éprouvée. Avec l’hiver qui vient, il faudra aussi penser à de l’aide au chauffage. Lorsque le conflit s’apaisera, ce que nous espérons le plus rapidement possible, les efforts iront à la reconstruction des immeubles et, par-dessus tout, la guérison des personnes traumatisées.
« Enfin, nous appelons nos bienfaiteurs et bienfaitrices à prier pour la fin des violences, non seulement au Liban, mais dans toute la Terre sainte et le Moyen-Orient », implorent les directrices et directeur, ajoutant « nous unissons nos voix à l’appel du pape François en faveur d’un cessez-le-feu, qui est une première étape nécessaire pour une résolution juste et pacifique du conflit ».
