Catechetics and Education

The Catechetics Department assists in the development and nurturing of a faith formation process for children and families in the Archdiocese of Regina.  Most of the work done involves partnering with catechists, especially in rural areas.

This Department was formerly called the Religious Education Department. “Catechetics” is a more wide-reaching term that refers to the ministry of assisting people in deepening their communion with Jesus and with their faith community. The fundamental tasks of catechesis are: promoting knowledge of the faith (“religious education”); liturgical formation; moral formation; teaching to pray; education for community life; missionary initiation.

It is the hope of the Archdiocese of Regina that all parishes have in place an on-going parish catechetical program for children. This program should involve an integration of Scripture, doctrine, prayer, liturgy, faith sharing, and outreach. The Catechetics Department strives to make this hope a reality.

Here’s What’s New!

All Child Catechists, any parents concerned with their children's faith formation, Deanery Reps, Pastors - EVERYONE indeed welcome and encouraged to attend. Mike MacDonald, Catechetical Office, Regina has kindly offered to be with us for this session and to facilitate a discussion, especially on how we interest our youth and how we form our children in the faith. Especially because Archbishop Daniel Bohan will be visiting many parishes in the Archdiocese of Regina during the month of May, I have received a number of phone calls asking me if I know how people might obtain a copy of the Archdiocesan GUIDELINES FOR PARISH CELEBRATIONS OF CONFIRMATION and FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2012.These Guidelines are available in the Liturgy section of the Archdiocese of Regina web site ( Read More
The road to this blog post was a meandering one. But it seemed to be meant to be. It all started last week when I decided to reread (for maybe the fifth time in the last twenty years) one of my favorite books of all time, The Power of Myth. This book is a transcript of conversations aired on PBS in 1988 between mythologist Joseph Campbell and journalist Bill Moyers. Read More
I confess that I adapted this title from an article I read the other day on the CNN Belief Blog (http://religion.blogs.cnn.com). The article was called Raising Religious (But Not Too Religious) Children, and it was written by Laurel Snyder, a Jewish poet, author, and mother. Read More

We Are An Easter People!

Last updated on April 10, 2012
Just because I love this phrase, I tried to “find its roots.” Pope John Paul II used it on occasion, but it is usually attributed to Saint Augustine. I suppose that it is possible that St. Augustine used the exact phrase on some occasion and that those words were passed down orally for centuries, but it seems more likely that the quote is a creative paraphrase of St. Augustine’s words recorded in his exposition on Psalm 148. Journeying Through Lent

Last updated on March 27, 2012
The Gospel of Mark has long been my favorite gospel, and it is undoubtedly due to Mark that the season of Lent always challenges me to reflect on how I can best use these 40 days of Lent in order to become a better person, a better disciple, a better human being—and to better prepare for the incredible Easter event of New Life. SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS IN BIENFAIT

Last updated on March 22, 2012
The other night I had the honour of participating in a meeting with families in the parish of St. Monica in Bienfait. The topic of conversation was to be an on-going program of faith formation for the children —and we did talk about that a bit—but it was evident that people’s hearts were heavy for other reasons as well. Who doesn’t know that in Canada abortion is an allowable ‘medical procedure’?  Very few, I’m guessing. I also guess that the vast majority of Canadians have never considered how this social contagion has found its way into Canadian society.

This week, I had the opportunity to hang out with some high school students as  we embarked on a  "pilgrimage walk".  We processed through parts of South Regina, with a group of about 70 teenagers, stopping at various points along the way to pray and reflect. We were led by some pretty talented wandering minstrels!

I have a lot of questions regarding marriage annulments, so I decided to go to the experts at the Regina Regional Marriage Tribunal for some answers.  Joan Myers, the case instructor/notary here in Regina, provided this answer to the question, “What is an annulment and why do coupl

Jesus’ commandment is that His disciples love one another, even to the point of laying down their lives, if necessary.  What gifts of myself – my skills and talents, my time and resources – will best demonstrate my love for God’s people?

Read the Archbishop's letter about the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops initiative to make the family a major focus of our future pastoral efforts.
